What Exactly Is Avengers: Doomsday About?

Marvel has shown us plenty of Avengers: Doomsday without actually telling us exactly what happens.

The official trailer gives us Doctor Doom, returning Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and several shots that look very bad for the multiverse. Marvel’s official description goes slightly further, confirming that heroes from three distinct universes will be pushed onto a deadly collision course.

So the Avengers: Doomsday plot is still mostly under wraps. What we do know is that Doctor Doom sits at the center of it, several corners of Marvel history are about to collide, and the stakes appear to stretch far beyond one version of Earth.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.

That leaves a lot of room for theories, and Marvel has given fans plenty to work with.

Which Avengers Are Confirmed to Be in Doomsday?

Marvel has confirmed a huge ensemble, and it stretches well beyond the Avengers themselves.

Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and Letitia Wright as Shuri. Chris Evans is also officially back as Steve Rogers, while Robert Downey Jr. plays Victor von Doom.

The Fantastic Four are here too, with Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach returning. The X-Men side includes Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming, alongside Channing Tatum’s Gambit.

The New Avengers, Wakandans, and characters from Talokan are also involved. Marvel has said the full cast still has not been announced, so fan-favorite names including Deadpool, Tobey Maguire, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man remain unconfirmed at the time of writing.

Our Take on the Avengers: Doomsday Trailer

The trailer makes one thing feel pretty clear: this is shaping up like a multiversal disaster movie.

Fans on Reddit have zeroed in on incursions, where different universes collide with potentially catastrophic consequences. That theory lines up remarkably well with Marvel’s own description of heroes from three distinct universes being placed on a collision course. Many fans think those worlds are the MCU, the Fantastic Four’s universe, and the returning X-Men’s reality. Marvel has not confirmed that exact combination.

And Marvel has now added another clue.

New Avengers: Endgame – Encore footage shows Loki arriving at Steve Rogers’ home, while Anthony Russo says Doomsday effectively demanded that they pick the story back up from where Endgame left it. Whatever Steve did after returning the Infinity Stones may matter more than we thought.

Then there is Doom.

The trailer shows Thor going directly at him, with Doom appearing to gain the upper hand. Fans have naturally started asking how he became powerful enough to handle one of the MCU’s strongest heroes. Some theories give Doom access to a much larger source of multiversal power. Others suggest he understands the coming collapse better than anyone else.

That second idea is the one we find most interesting.

Doom could genuinely believe he is the person capable of saving what remains of reality. Of course, Victor von Doom has never lacked confidence about who should be in charge once the saving is done.

That leads straight to Battleworld.

A popular theory on Reddit is that the Avengers: Doomsday plot ends with the heroes failing to prevent the collapse. Doom then preserves what remains by stitching pieces of different realities together into Battleworld, echoing Marvel’s 2015 Secret Wars story.

That structure makes a lot of sense to us. Doomsday could play the Infinity War role in this two-film story: Doom wins, reality breaks, and Avengers: Secret Wars begins in the world created from whatever survived.

The Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wakandans, New Avengers, and everyone else may be gathering for more than one gigantic superhero team-up.

Marvel could be putting every major piece on the board before smashing the board itself.

For now, that is still a theory. But if the trailer is pointing where fans think it is, “Doomsday” may turn out to be a very literal title.
