What Is the TMNT Blimp? The Story Behind the Turtles’ Flying Machine

A giant green blimp with a Turtle shell design sounds completely bonkers, which is part of why it fits the 1987 cartoon so well.

The TMNT Turtle Blimp was one of the Turtles’ most memorable ways of getting above the streets of New York. Part zeppelin and part detachable glider, it gave Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo their own way to take the fight to Shredder and the Foot Clan from the sky.

And of course, there was a toy for fans who wanted to recreate the action at home. Playmates brought the Turtle Blimp into its classic 1988 toy line, turning one of Donnie’s wildest inventions into a memorable piece of TMNT history.

Who Built the Turtle Blimp?

No surprise here: Donatello built it.

In the 1987 show, Donnie was the tech whiz behind plenty of the Turtles’ gear and vehicles. The Turtle Blimp was one of his biggest and strangest creations.

The Blimp made its debut in the Season 1 finale, “Shredder & Splintered.” Donatello arrives in his new invention, built using the Neutrinos’ Star Mobile and spare parts from Baxter Stockman’s lab, before putting it straight to work against a giant Krang.

From there, the Turtle Blimp became a regular part of the Turtles’ airborne arsenal.

How Did the Turtle Blimp Work?

Donatello equipped the Turtle Blimp with two large turbines on the front wing and a stabilizer fan at the rear.

Its standout feature was the detachable glider, which could separate from the balloon for faster, more agile flight and even reconnect in mid-air. That gave the Turtles a way to ditch the slower blimp whenever things got serious.

The Blimp was ready for a fight too, with cluster bombs and a laser-style weapon mounted on the front of the glider.

It was pure Donatello: useful, over-engineered, and strange enough to feel completely at home in TMNT.

What Happened to the Turtle Blimp?

The Turtle Blimp remained part of the Turtles’ arsenal for years, but its run in the original animated series eventually came to a rough end.

In the Season 9 episode “The Unknown Ninja,” TechnoGang laser fire destroys one of the glider’s wings. The Turtles are forced to bail out before the damaged vehicle crashes, and the Blimp does not appear again during the original series.

Years later, the Turtle Blimp returned in the 2009 crossover movie Turtles Forever. The classic 1987 Turtles brought it back into action during the battle against the upgraded Technodrome, giving one of their strangest vehicles another chance to fly.

The Classic 1988 Playmates TMNT Turtle Blimp

For kids watching TMNT in the late 1980s, seeing the Turtle Blimp on television was only half the fun.

Playmates Toys released its own Turtle Blimp as part of the original 1988 TMNT vehicle toy line. The toy combined a huge inflatable blimp with a detachable Turtle Glider that could roll across the ground when separated from the balloon.

The glider came loaded with six pegs for Turtle figures, four bombs, two torpedoes, dual machine guns, and an Anti-Foot Blaster with a rotating turret. Fully inflated, the balloon stretched to around 30 inches long.

Big, weird, and unmistakably Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the 1988 Turtle Blimp remains one of the most memorable vehicles from the classic Playmates era.
