The U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 160 million residences, businesses, and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations. The Commemorative Stamp Program issues stamps that honor events, persons, or themes. The first stamps were issued in 1893. To date, more than three thousand commemorative stamps have been issued that celebrate America’s national history – from animals to plants, people to places, and anniversaries to events. The Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee was established in 1957 and its members use their collective expertise in history, science, technology, art, education, sports, and other areas of public interest, to consider and then recommend stamp subjects to the Postmaster General for final approval. © 2021 United States Postal Service®.
