The Commemorative Stamp Program issues stamps that honor events, persons, or themes. The first stamps were issued by the Post Office Department in 1893. To date, more than three thousand commemorative stamps have been issued that celebrate America’s national history – from animals to plants, people to places, and anniversaries to events. The Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee was established in 1957 and its members use their collective expertise in history, science, technology, art, education, sports, and other areas of public interest, to consider and then recommend stamp subjects to the Postmaster General for final approval. © 2024 United States Postal Service®.
